Currently, most iron ore processing plants in my country employ single-stage or two-stage iron ore grinding mills. Two-stage grinding can be further divided into two-stage continuous grinding and staged grinding and separation processes.

In the first stage, under relatively coarse particle size conditions, the gangue (tailings) that has been liberated is discarded through roughing. The rough concentrate is then fed into the second stage grinding mill to the required fineness, and further separation yields qualified iron concentrate. Because some final tailings are separated under coarse grinding conditions, the feed rate to the second stage grinding mill is reduced, the required mill volume is decreased, and the amount of ore required for subsequent separation operations is also reduced. Therefore, the cost of mineral processing is reduced. It is evident that a staged grinding and separation process is more rational than two-stage continuous grinding.

Furthermore, in concentrators processing lean iron ore, timely separation of liberated gangue particles while using the coarsest possible grinding size in the iron ore mill aligns with the beneficiation principle of "discarding as early as possible." By studying ore properties and determining the appropriate grinding size for the staged iron ore mill, ultra-coarse grinding with large-particle coarse separation and tailings removal should be employed whenever possible.
